Balisage Peer Review

How does Balisage peer review work?

All submitted papers are read by the conference committee and by at least 3 members of our reviewer panel. Very clear rejections (for example, if the submission is too short to provide material for review, or totally off topic) may be made by the committee at the first stage in order not to waste reviewers' time. All others are sent for review, with author name, biography, and affiliation removed. Reviewers are asked to rate papers in a systematic way against a number of desirable characteristics, in addition to making free-form comments and an overall recommendation on acceptance. At the end of the review period, the final selection of papers is made by the conference committee using the input received from reviewers.

Who reviews for Balisage?

Balisage reviewers have in common a serious interest in some aspect(s) of markup languages. Beyond that, they are very diverse, and include: We also welcome reviewers who are not markup languages specialists, but have an interest in markup languages as part of some other area of research or practice. We are primarily interested in the markup languages aspects of submitted papers. However, markup languages are used in many different situations and we prefer to have at least one reviewer for each paper who is familiar with the context in which the author has developed his/her ideas.

What do I need to do in order to review?

Read a number (usually 4-6) of submitted papers in the week or so after paper submission closes, fill in the rating form for each one, and make any additional comments you feel moved to make. Some papers are an easy call; others may need a fair bit of time and thought. Guidelines are provided to help answer the rating questions, and the committee can provide support if needed.
